I’ve had the Suunto Spartan sport hr watch for at least six years. I had it custom made for me, have loved it all this time. The 5 Peak has all the same features built into it that my Spartan has as far as gps, heartrate, tracking, ect. I love that that the peak 5 is so much smaller and lighter than the Spartan. The only difference
‘s between the two would be that the 5 doesn’t have the touch screen that the Spartan has. Plus my Spartan has a Sapphire face, where the 5 in the specs. says only a plastic face. Don’t have any marks on it yet but will see how it goes. Both have been great.

Update- I am allergic to the silicone band! I ordered another 22mm nylon one- the closure button started it, then the band started a reaction after I removed that. Beware! The new band is working well so far.
I got this b/c the Apple watch only lasts 18hrs for the same price point, so I opted for the Suunto for that and that it’s an ‘old friend’ company from my forestry days when Suunto compasses were the thing to have. Once I got used to the watch and how to read, it’s perfect- just wish it had blood ox., but I can do w/o and have heartbeat and sleep data, which is what I use most. Nice fit, comfy, and east to read. Big step up from my $40 fitness watch that worked great and could go almost a month on a charge. The Suunto Peak 5 looks like it can go 10 days set the way I have it. Beats the Apple Watch in that respect.

The most negative review for this item is the poor lighting, I do not find it to be an issue though. Perhaps we are all just too used to the brightness of smartphones. The less screen time the better, try it and maybe the dimness of the screen won’t be an issue. The battery life it great, I keep mine on reserve and am still abel to achieve all I need to, such as logging exercise, navigation, and checking my heart rate manually (which should only be done when not moving, otherwise the readings are all over the place). I highly recommend this watch.

Great watch

I enjoyed the simple and straight forward interface.
I used pretty much every feature and activity on the watch. Looked nice and sleek.
Then one day (with no outside or apparent damage to watch) it decided to start glitching and displaying multiple screens at one time, and then completely shut off about an hour later with the pictured damage to the inner display.
Hopefully the situation will be remedied but I’m just super disappointed that I spent a couple hundred dollars on a GPS sport watch and it can’t handle the careful use I put it to (I use a Garmin Forerunner 955 solar for real excursions… so far so good.. so Suunto.. if you’d like to prove you guys haven’t fully been left behind in the market; please reach out.
I wanted so bad for the watch to be reliable.
I’m just glad I wasn’t needing it to guide me when it crapped the bed.
UPDATE: Watch is scheduled to be picked up for repair.
Will update again when the repair/ replacement is handled.
UPDATE: Replacement watch has be sent

Overall I really like this watch as a dedicated running watch – programmable/customizable, easy to use, not too menu-heavy, reasonable menu system, decent app, good battery life, accurate HR monitor. But the display is SO DIM — I was prepared for this based on other reviews, but still surprised nonetheless. Interestingly, although being a lit display, it is actually thankfully much easier to read outside in the sun. It also has a black-on-white background option which I think is better than the white-on-black default.
The numbers in the data fields are also rather small and can be a bit hard to read, but I got used to it after a couple of runs.

Cons:
-watch and charger will create and throw sparks when not hooked up perfectly while charging
-heart rate monitor is complete garbage (will show 73 bpm while running at high intensity, state average bpm for 5 mile run is 84 bpm, never ever do you get a consistent reading. Was told it isn’t meant to get accurate readings besides resting, need to buy separate monitor)
-terrible customer service (every solution to problems is to simply make sure watch is updated and then to do a factory reset)
-lack of customization
-much more
Pros:
– app is excellent, the 3D summary of an outdoor hike is my favorite thing when you finish your trek
-stop watch works
-tells time
-attery is amazing when you don’t use any of the features
