I ended up buying this unit to start with. TLDR this unit ended up getting replaced with the Polar H10 instead. That is a much better unit compared to the Garmin. Here is a comparison between the two units if you aren’t sure which to buy.
The strap.
I’m a big boy at 275 pounds so I bought the larger strap to go with the unit. The garmin strap was trash. Too thin and soft and so it just rolled up with movement. The Polar strap is a little firmer though so it can better stay flat without rolling up. This is huge when it comes to comfort as when the strap rolls up it will dig into your skin a little more. The Polar strap I could probably wear all day long without issue.
The unit itself – Big win for Polar.
The Garmin unit at first wouldn’t detect my heart rate. Tried all the tricks from submerging it in water, licking the pads, getting all sweaty and then trying it. Nothing. Only way I was able to get it to work was buying conductive gel and using that on the pads. Next problem was once I started working out I had about 20-30 minutes before it quit working. What sucks is you wouldn’t know it though as it doesn’t display 0. Instead, it just keeps displaying the same heart rate that it was able to detect. This kind of sucks though as your heart rate could be very different, but you would never know.
what makes it even worse is once the unit quits working, that’s it for the next couple hours. It WILL NOT WORK no matter what you do. Dry the strap out, clean the strap and pads, apply more gel, apply less gel, dunk the strap, dry it out again. NOTHING!
Had this happen during Full Frontal 4DP test by The Sufferfest by Wahoo. Figured it was just a fluke and I’ll try again. Once again half way through the test it just quits and will not work for the next couple hours. That’s a pretty crappy deal to get half way through that test and then just have the heart rate quit working invalidating the whole test.
Figured ok maybe it’s just too much. maybe I’m sweating too much, maybe my heart rate is going wonky. Who knows. Lets just do a normal training run instead that’s hopefully not quite as intensive. Again 20-30 minutes in it would just quit. This happened EVERY SINGLE TIME for any type of ride I did. This is kind of worthless. You get through any warm up, and just starting on the actual workout at which point the unit bricks itself and won’t work for the next couple hours.
The Polar unit on the other hand worked right from the start. I have never used the conductive gel with unit. Hell I don’t even have to wet the strap down or anything. I just put it on and start riding.Don’t think I have had it actually drop out during an exercise. I have tested it though to see what would happen if it does quit detecting my heart rate by lifting up one side of the pads of my chest. This is another huge win in that if it does quit detecting your heart rate this will show 0. Very much unlike the garmin still displaying the last heart rate detected which is incorrect. Even if that heart rate was from 10 minutes ago.
The polar unit also has the ability to be used through third party apps to detect your heart rate variability and such. You can even download apps so you can actually see the electrical signal from your heart if you really wanted to though I have no way to confirm how accurate that is. It’s just the fact that Polar opens this up for use like that unlike the garmin is a huge win.
Overall I wouldn’t bother with the Garmin unit. If you are unsure which to buy, just guy the polar H10. Much better unit over all in every way.

This HRM died after 31 days so I could not return it. Online help for this product was not helpful. I called and they were very nice, honoring their 1 year warranty. The battery may have died early sitting in Amazon warehouse. She gave me a good discount on a watch with wrist HR.

I read everyone complaining about the torx screws v phillipshead screws to change the battery and I laughed. Then mine came with the tool required, so Garmin must have heard you.
Garmin HRM Dual…$51 on sale. I can confirm it does not work with Garmin Connect app, but I knew that before I purchased.
I opened the box, snapped the unit to the strap, wet the sensors with water, put it on, and it immediately paired to the Health app on my iPhone. No issues. I downloaded the free Heart Graph app from the app store. This app requires no account and does not collect data. It immediately paired with the Garmin. No issues. The unit looks and feels tough and sturdy with a good strap. I know it is accurate because I compared data with two other sensors I know are accurate. I am very pleased with the cost to value ratio of the Garmin HRM Dual.

Male, 5’9″ 190 lbs 44″ hairy chest. I only wear it running – an average of 4-6 hours per week.
Positives – comfortable! I perspire a good bit and it holds up. A snug but not uncomfortable fit works great. I don’t notice it, which is a big plus.
Negatives – Garmin IOS app is not designed to recognize it -I mean come on its your product! The device doesn’t show up in the selection list. Apple Health rarely picks up the signal – this is a big disappointment as the NikeRunClub only gets HR data through Apple Health. Another third party app (Heart Graph) works great with it – so I don’t have HR data integrated with my other NRC data.
Overall a good value priced HRM. YMMV & please correct me if I missed something.

Couldn’t be happier with my Garmin heart rate monitor. My first one lasted more than 10 years before going wonky. This one is a much-improved design – you run the chest strap under water before putting it on, with the water being absorbed into 2 reservoirs. This makes the heart rate accurate from the start, rather than having to wait for sweat to create a stable connection. I use this with a Garmin bike computer and with a Wahoo on Swift. No issues on either.

I purchased this HRM to pair with my Garmin Forerunner 35, which is getting a little older. There are times when I am lifting weights that I have to remove my watch in order to use my wrist straps for dead lifts, etc. The HRM allows me to continue to get a real time picture of my heart rate while under stress. Setting it up was a little tricky but that’s on me. It does not sync up with the Garmin Connect app but rather pairs with my iPhone and then with my Garmin watch. Once I got it set up it has worked flawlessly. I think Garmin could do better on their instructions for setting it up but otherwise I am very pleased with the purchase.

Some people are complaining about this not working. I’m 95% certain they’re not sufficiently wetting the electrodes, as I had similar problems when I first bought it.
Here’s the best way to put this strap on to ensure it actually turns on: run the pads under water so you wet both the pad and the strap material next to the pads. Pull the strap around the top of your abs, connect the clasp, then slide it horizontally into the correct position. Sliding it ensures water from the soaked strap sufficiently hydrates your skin where the plastic electrodes end up sitting. The HRM won’t turn on if there isn’t sufficient moisture between the pad and your skin (which is common in the morning).
Have been using this strap nearly every day for a year without issue. Pairs with everything from my Garmin Fenix 5S (you can pair it right from the watch… don’t need to use an app) to my Edge 1030 plus, commercial equipment, and even my Apple TV (for Zwift). Had no issues pairing to both my watch and Apple TV at the same time.

Ça m’a convaincu !
